About the Program
Waste Management's Pine Tree Acres Landfill consists of 457 acres located in a historically rural part of southeast Michigan. The facility operates as a type-II non-hazardous sanitary landfill, but also houses natural habitat such as forests and emergent wetlands. The Kirkham Drain and several of its tributaries traverse the property. The team at Pine Tree Acres Landfill actively manages 100.7 acres for wildlife habitat. One of the team's main focuses has been on constructing artificial nesting structures for native species.

Practices and Impacts
  • Bluebird nest boxes are installed at several locations to provide cavity nesting habitat. Boxes did not have bluebird activity but other migratory songbirds have been seen using the boxes.
  • Duck nest boxes are installed to provide nesting and shelter habitat for wood ducks near wetland areas on site. Wood ducks have been seen to use the nest boxes for breeding in previous years.
