About the Program
The GP Big Island site consists of approximately 1,000 acres near Big Island, Virginia, where Georgia-Pacific has had an operating presence for decades. Much of the site is wooded or in an otherwise natural condition, and the company utilizes different areas within the site to implement various conservation projects.

Practices and Impacts
  • On a one-acre parcel, Georgia-Pacific is working with the American Chestnut Foundation to test the blight resistance of 15/16 American to Chinese Chestnut hybrid.
  • This is essentially a 20-year monitoring project that is approximately half completed.
  • Trees were planted and fenced to protect from browsers, and growth and survival are being monitored over time to determine survivability and suitability for use in the restoration of chestnuts in the eastern US.
  • The site monitors mammal species and provides nutrition through food plots.
