About the Program
The site for these Monsanto projects is located in central Illinois in a city called Illiopolis. Over 20 acres of the site have been dedicated to habitat conservation and includes both a large grassland habitat and pollinator habitat dedicated to the preservation of monarch butterflies. The conservation objectives include transforming the farmland the site is on to its former glory by restoring the native habitat.
Practices and Impacts
- The grassland habitat project has focused on restoring the land from farmland back into the grassland that it had been before. The project utilizes management techniques such as seeding native plants, seed collecting, and controlled burns to achieve their objective.
- The pollinator project focuses specifically on monarch butterflies and works for create more habitat for the migrating species. The project has included the dedication of over 6 acres to monarch habitat where they have included prescribed burns and overseeding of pollinator important plants. The project monitors both the monarchs seen in the habitat and the plant species that provide them food.
