About the Program
WM's Buffalo Ridge Landfill is located on over 4,600 acres of prairie land in Colorado, northwest of Denver. Around the landfill, thousands of acres of grassland provide a home to native birds and mammals, such as red-tailed hawks and pronghorn antelopes. The project team works to demonstrate how landfill practices can be integrated with local ecosystems (in their case, a short-grass prairie ecosystem). The project site is mowed and sprayed to reduce invasive species, and a rotating grazing schedule has been developed to help maintain the grassland ecosystem.

Practices and Impacts
  • In order to support the native raptor species on the project site, the team installed a series of raised poles and platforms from which the predators can perch and hunt. The team also created a brush pile that serves as a home for prey species that the targeted raptors depend on.
