About the Program

First certified in 2011, WM's Middle Peninsula Landfill and Recycling Facility is located in Gloucester County, VA, and covers 592 acres, 35 acres of which are managed for wildlife habitat. The site's habitat is composed of wetlands, woodlands, open grasslands and ponds. Middle Peninsula Landfill employees actively monitor and manage two avian projects on-site.

Practices and Impacts

  • The team monitors bird boxes that provide space for cavity-nesting native birds including eastern bluebirds and purple martins.
  • The bird boxes are regularly monitored to record nest type, life stage and young status. The boxes are maintained through routine cleanings.
