About the Program
The Voyageur Industrial Landfill site in Canyon, Minnesota is operated by Waste Management. The landfill is in the northeast portion of the state, about 50 miles west of Lake Superior. The site contains a 2 acre pond, as well as other grassland areas. The conservation objective is to provide pond habitat for a variety of native species, including beaver, turtles, deer, waterfowl, and rabbits. A retention pond upstream from the habitat reduces sediment runoff from the landfill.

Practices and Impacts
  • Employees monitored a small pond on-site to determine wildlife usage and suitability as a habitat for beavers, birds, turtles, and other species. The project saw use of the site by a variety of species, including wolves, deer, and birds.
  • Employees built brush pules and monitored for small mammal usage, such as chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits. The project saw active usage of the brush piles and project site by a variety of small mammal species.
