Introduction
CEMEX's Demopolis Cement Plant located in Alabama's coastal plains encompasses 16 acres of mixed forest and the Old Quarry Pond. The wooded banks surrounding the pond are predominately evergreen and mixed evergreen-deciduous forest, such as oak-pine, loblolly-shortleaf pine and oak-hickory. The site is located in the Lower Black Warrior Watershed, which spans across six counties in Alabama. In 2008, the CEMEX Demopolis wildlife team built several wood duck and eastern blue bird nesting boxes with the help of Demopolis High School students to increase the species' reproductive success by providing supplemental nesting habitats.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team monitors the wood duck boxes throughout the nesting season and performs regular maintenance (cleaning and repairing) on the nesting structures.
  • Observations have indicated that there tend to be multiple broods each year. The wildlife team consulted with biologists from the Alabama Wildlife Federation and Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources on the features of the boxes, including predator guards.
