About the Program
The Kloempken Prairie is an eight-acre right-of-way owned and managed by ComEd (an Exelon company) in the Des Plains River floodplain in Cook County, Illinois. The site contains native wetland and mesic prairie plants and is managed for its plant biodiversity and the pollinator community it supports. The site is cooperatively managed with the Forest Preserves of Cook County, who owns approximately 167 acres of adjacent property with similar characteristics and management needs.

Practices and Impacts
  • The site is inventoried, and the results are subsequently used to develop subsequent management plans. Invasive woody vegetation and weeds are controlled with herbicide treatments and mowing. When appropriate, prescribed burns are also used as a management tool.
  • Monitoring includes meandering surveys of plant species and a count of pollinator species.
