About the Program
The General Motors Oshawa Assembly Plant is located on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, 35 miles northeast of Toronto, Canada. It consists of a 5.1-million-square-foot facility that has been manufacturing cars since 1953. Land around the facility is utilized to further aspects of GM’s global environmental policy, including a commitment to STEM community education, water conservation and quality and the protection of biodiversity. The site includes forest, landscape and wetland habitats.
  • In 2022, the team planted an 8.6-acre forested habitat of native species. Planted trees include Canada plum, red maple and black birch.
  • The team planted and maintains two pollinator gardens to provide food for monarch butterfly populations. Species planted include common milkweed and cardinal flower. The team monitors the gardens for pollinator use and monarch butterflies have regularly been observed.
  • The team manages almost 11 acres of wetland habitat and monitors the flora and fauna in the habitat.
