About the Program
The Winston-Salem Cement Terminal has a program located on five acres in a rural area about 35 miles west of Greensboro, North Carolina. In 1992, the Roanoke Cement Company, LLC of Titan America LLC acquired this property with several other industrial facilities surrounding the site. First becoming certified in 2013, Titan America’s projects started in 2010 and have actively managed a landscaped habitat for wildlife conservation initiatives that now expands one acre.

Practice and Impacts

  • The pollinator habitat includes an acre of landscaped habitat designed for pollinators across several plots with native species like American beautyberry, butterfly weed, and switch grass. A new 200-square-foot plot was recently added to attract more pollinators; however, the project continues to struggle with invasive pollinators and plant species.
  • Another project specifically targets local populations of eastern Bluebirds. With the addition of four birdhouses and a bird bath, the landscaped habitat and its surroundings provide bluebirds with food and water resources, in addition to opportunities to find shelter and nest.
  • Eastern bluebirds use the bird boxes to nest, sometimes multiple times a season.
  • The pollinator project is designed to support a broad range of pollinators and targets at least one native species, the American bumblebee, which is a threatened species to North America.
  • The plants within the landscaped habitat offer pollinators shelter and food, and more observations of pollinators, especially butterflies, have occurred in recent years.
