About the Program
General Motors' São Caetano do Sul Complex site is located in an urban area in São Paulo, Brazil, which consists of a manufacturing plant, a tech center and a wastewater treatment plant. The education program was first certified in 2014, and the team consists of employees at all levels within the company. Through these projects, the team seeks to create natural areas and designed structures that create habitat for wildlife and that provide educational opportunities for employees and the surrounding community.

Practices and Impacts
  • In order to increase the biodiversity of insect species on the project site, the team created multiple insect hotels to provide shelter and habitat for insects such as ants and beetles. The team created one hotel that consists of a car frame filled with logs and plant debris, and the surrounding landscaped habitat provides sustenance for foraging insects.
  • The team engaged local elderly residents in a hands-on educational event in order to teach them about the importance of insect populations. The team first gave a presentation about insect habitat, using the insect hotels on-site as an example. The team then led the group in creating an insect hotel that will provide shelter for multiple species of arthropod.
