About the Program
Argos USA Corporation's Argos Cement Newberry Plant is located in Newberry, Florida about 30 miles west of Gainesville. The plant consists of an active open-water mine pit. Surrounding vegetation includes slash pine, oaks, sweetgum, palmetto, and grasses. Water on site provides habitat for insects eaten by bats. The team's objectives include replacing artificial roosts lost when bats were evicted from the site's administrative buildings, demonstrating the success of an artificial roost among the natural roosts that exist at the historic mine pit, and increasing total bat density in the local area.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team works with representatives of Lubee Bat Conservancy who assist with routine monitoring and maintenance of the bat roost boxes and bat population. Species identified include the Mexican free-tailed bat, evening bat, and southeastern myotis.
  • Along with Lubee Bat Conservancy, the team monitors the roost for bat droppings and signs of predators.
