About the Program
The GM Woodstock Parts Distribution Centre is located an hour and a half southwest of Toronto, Canada. The location lies in a commercial area of Woodstock, which is itself surrounded by agricultural land. It is a warehousing facility for the storage and distribution of materials to dealerships. Land around the facility is utilized to support aspects of GM's global environmental policy, including STEM community education, water conservation and quality, and protecting biodiversity. Their most recent initiative is ongoing STEM education programming.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team partners with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority to provide hands-on STEM education through GM's EcoSTEM program. Team members can become GM Mentors who facilitate education events, working with small groups of students to help them gain STEM awareness as well as knowledge of stream health.
  • Seventh and eighth grade students attend three educational events to learn about water and water quality. One lesson takes place at the Upper Thames River, where students measure stream health. The other events entail a classroom visit and a trip to the CAMI wastewater treatment plant.
