About the Program
Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s Ohio Refining Division Site is located approximately 60 miles southeast of Cleveland, Ohio. The refinery processes crude oils, distillates, asphalt, roofing flux, propane, propylene and slurry. The Westwoods program area is bordered by a neighborhood to the north, industrial facilities to the east and west and a road to the south. In 2015, a prairie was established on-site, and in the following years, an invasive species project and education and awareness project have been added to the program.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team maintains about three acres of native prairie landscaping on-site for pollinators.
  • Landscape monitoring is adaptively managed to collect more information while maintaining consistency of the data being collected. Pollinator species and plant data are collected from pre-defined points within the project area.
  • A 498-room bug hotel is monitored using a robust monitoring protocol that details insect and overwintering activity, including the type of material used to plug up a hole. This information can help to indicate what species are using the hotel.
  • The team actively manages for invasive species on-site. Removal includes cutting, pulling and selective herbicide treatments.
  • In 2022, the invasive species management team removed invasive species.
