About the Program
Westwoods is a landscaped habitat bordered on three sides by Marathon Petroleum's Ohio Refinery Division industrial buildings and infrastructure. There is natural wooded land one the 4th side of the landscaped area. Originally the area was divided into two parts, a mowed area and an unmanaged area of shrubs and trees. This project application is a renewal for the project that aims to re-establish natural habitat to encourage pollinator species and growth of native vegetation.
Practices and Impacts
- The team manages open woodland habitat on site by cutting down and disposing of problematic invasive plant species found there and planting native species.
- In 2020, the team completed the installation of a bug hotel with nearly 500 holes in a variety of sizes.
- The team maintains trails throughout the site with informational signage detailing the importance of the ecosystems, plants and pollinators found there.
- The team regularly monitors the plant and wildlife species that use the site, which to date has included three different species of grasshopper, a variety of butterfly species, a red fox, wild turkeys, and white-tailed deer.
