About the Program
Bayer's Matthews Missouri site is located along I-55 approximately halfway between St. Louis, Missouri and Memphis, Tennessee. Employees have implemented a monarch butterfly and other pollinator habitat plot program to supply critical habitat for pollinators that have been lost due to development. The conservation program also includes educational events for both employees and local youth programs.

Practices and Impacts

  • A pollinator-friendly grassland was developed and is monitored to support three species of milkweed and other native plants beneficial to monarchs, other butterflies and bees.
  • In 2021, the team sent packets of wildflower seeds to the 4-H youth program to spread in their local area to spread awareness and educate the kids on the importance of pollinators and conservation, since they were not able to participate in person. For Earth Day, they sent wildflower seeds, potting soil, pots and interactive worksheets teaching the benefits of wildflowers to pollinators and the benefits of pollinators to the earth. The students at Southeast Elementary were eager to learn about pollinators as well, so the team sent interactive worksheets that they created, teaching students about the benefits of wildflowers and pollinators. They also sent packets of wildflower seeds so they could start their own pollinator plot at home.
