About the Program
The Grandin Sand Plant in Melrose, Florida, is situated southwest of Jacksonville and just east of Gainesville, Florida. This sand plant owned and operated by Vulcan Materials Company is located in northern Florida, due west of the St. Johns River and north of Lake George. With 63 acres of wetland and water bodies supporting several large rookeries on-site and several nesting boxes located throughout, this site attracts an array of native wildlife species.

Practices and Impacts
  • The wading bird project provides a variety of habitat throughout the site, with excellent nesting and roosting trees located throughout wetlands and waterbodies where over 127 different species of birds have been documented.
  • This plant has worked closely with its neighbor, the Ordway Swisher Biological Research Station, to manage for invasive plant species on-site. Herbicide and manual removal are conducted annually to control the spread of invasive species to neighboring properties, giving native plant species a fighting chance.
