About the Program

NiSource’s Pennsylvania Right of Way Habitat Program is located in suburban Wexford, Pennsylvania, where the team manages 5.5 acres of grassland habitat for the benefit of local pollinators and other wildlife. The program encompasses a utility right-of-way connected to the Rachel Carson Trail Conservancy network and is adjacent to numerous small wetlands. The team conducts training for employees to learn about pollinators, plant identification and invasive species management.

Practices and Impacts

  • To provide site planners and technicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage the habitat, in-person plant identification trainings by a naturalist were started in 2017. Since then, e-learning was also integrated into the in-person trainings by means of an app to continuously engage learners in plant identification throughout the year.
