About the Program
Opel Automobile GmbH’s Opel Manufacturing Poland Sp. z o.o. Gliwice site is located northwest of the town of Gliwice, Poland, in an area dotted with industrial facilities, farms, neighborhoods and forests. The site contains grassland and wetland habitats. The team has replanted 50 square meters of the Dabrowa Stream on-site for the benefit of local wildlife and to preserve the habitat as well as restoring almost a half-acre of wildflower meadow. These efforts align with local and national initiatives to restore and protect habitats in urban areas.

Practices and Impacts
  • Through consultations with the local Silesian Botanical Garden in 2016, the team planned and implemented a restoration of the Dabrowa Stream that flows through the property, utilizing a variety of native trees and plants. By planting 60 native plants in the wetlands surrounding the Dabrowa Stream, the team has helped to reduce soil erosion, filter out pollutants, improve storm water management and provide suitable habitats for local wildlife.
  • Since then, the plantings are checked throughout the year, and changes are made to procedures such as watering as necessary. The team has also incorporated on-site tree planting into the site's environmental educational activities when possible.
  • As well as the stream site, a previously disused area is being restored to a native wildflower meadow. The team sowed a seed mix in 2020 and continues to manage the area with mowing and additional seeding as needed. The site is monitored regularly to ensure issues, such as over-dominance by specific plants, can be addressed to maintain diversity and provide a quality habitat for pollinators and other wildlife. The team holds environmental awareness events throughout the year to increase the awareness of these biodiversity initiatives among employees and their families.
