Austin Materials Hay's Quarry

About the Program
The Austin Materials Hay's Quarry program consists of 200 acres of forest and 160 acres of grassland habitat in Austin, Texas. The Quarry is located in an urban area where natural habitats, and the opportunities for youth to engage with these habitats, is greatly diminished. To help address this issue the team manages both a cavity nesting bird project and an environmental education project among their active work sites and surrounding habitats.

Practices and Impacts

• 20 bird boxes are monitored and maintained to support cavity nesting species
• Various brush piles were established as habitat for native birds
• Team members have designed and implemented an environmental education program for local school children
