Toyota Ann Arbor

The Toyota Ann Arbor campus is an industrial park within a wooded area with a nearby creek, which provides opportunities for wildlife conservation. It is located on the east side of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and is within the Huron River watershed. The program includes pollinator gardens, ponds and green infrastructure, totaling approximately 8.5 acres. The program team installed several conservation projects to increase water retention on-site, including pollinator gardens, bioswales, rain gardens and pervious pavement. Their work has greatly increased biodiversity on-site.

Practices and Impacts

• In parts of the campus that receive the most stormwater runoff, the team revitalized retention ponds. They removed invasive species and installed native plants, allowing more water retention and less over-saturation of the pond areas. The retention ponds are also used for irrigation purposes. The team manages the retention ponds in coordination with local wetland habitat as well, draining excess stormwater runoff to Fleming Creek.
• The team installed four pollinator gardens on their campus, providing habitat for native pollinators, songbirds and small mammals. The team selected native seed mixes rich in wildflowers and forbs to support a variety of pollinators. They have observed great plant growth and native wildlife utilizing the habitat.
