About the Program
Fischer School Prairie, a part of Exelon Corporation, is located in Elmhurst, Illinois on the outskirts of Chicago. This site is located in a major urban/suburban area where native ecosystems and access to wild lands is greatly reduced. To help address this issue, the team manages a nine-acre prairie habitat in a right-of-way area.

Practices and Impacts
  • Team members utilize mowing and spray applications to ensure a native species composition.
  • This project engages local elementary-aged children in prairie and pollinator conservation through partnership with The Conservation Foundation and the Mighty Acorns curriculum.
  • The site is visited at least once annually to identify new or worsening threats and develop adaptive management plans, and assign a quality class ranking. Early detection (via annual site assessments) and rapid response (via annual management) assist with maintaining the prairie restoration.
