About the Program
INVISTA's Victoria Site encompasses 4,500 acres in a predominately rural area approximately 10 miles south of Victoria, Texas. The site includes a wide variety of habitat types, such as grasslands, rangelands, wetlands and riparian areas. A 53-acre wetland was created in 1998 to provide habitat, improve water quality and provide a hands-on, outdoor learning environment for local school students. The team also works in partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to develop and implement wildlife management plans.

Practices and Impacts
  • An education program using the site's wetland as an outdoor classroom is carried out in partnership with the Victoria Independent School District. The lessons are designed to accomplish goals outlined by the Texas state standards of learning for grades 4-8 and to encourage students to use skills such as observation, inquiry and critical thinking. Students participate in nature walks through the wetland, observe flora and fauna, create casts of animal tracks and study food chains and food webs.
  • In celebration of 25 years of maintaining the wetland, INVISTA held an outreach event in 2023 that offered on site tours and educational activities. During the event, the Mayor of the City of Victoria provided a Proclamation declaring November 4, 2023 as "INVISTA Wetland Day", celebrating the benefits of the wetland to the surrounding communities.
