About the Program
Covia Holdings Corporation’s Marston, North Carolina plant is located in Richmond County, approximately seven miles northeast of Rockingham, North Carolina. The environmental conservation projects located on-site encompass a total of 58 acres of former mine land, consisting of forests, grasslands, ponds and lakes. The team is developing an on-site nature trail and a wetland project involving McLeod Lake to further their conservation goals. Since 1995, longleaf pines have been planted throughout the site, and they contribute to the program’s overall landscape diversity. The 11-person wildlife team works closely with partners such as the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the North Carolina Forest Service.

Practices and Impacts
  • A bluebird conservation effort began in the late 1990s and has now grown to include eight bluebird boxes spread across the orchard and wetland landscapes. The boxes are regularly monitored during breeding season and are checked and repaired annually. The team has observed a total of 38 bluebird clutches in the past three years.
