About the Program
The WIN Waste Innovations Center (formerly Wheelabrator Technologies) is a waste-to-energy facility that provides disposal services to local residents and businesses. This center is located in western New Jersey in Westville, just 10 miles south of Philadelphia. It's just south of the Delaware River and several of the tributaries that also connect to Lake Martha. This center hosts 30 acres of managed grassland habitat and several wildlife conservation projects including a pollinator garden and avian habitat enhancement project.

Practices and Impacts
  • The grassland habitat on-site has been managed and maintained to promote native grassland species and minimize invasive species presence. This portion of the center is mowed regularly and treated with herbicide spot treatment. Occasionally, prescribed burns are used to prevent the spread of phragmites on-site.
  • Maintenance of the grasslands on-site and local partnership with the community have led to enhanced avian habitat, providing the opportunity for avian species, like the bobwhite quail, to thrive.
  • Beehives, milkweed and other pollinator plants on-site have led to a variety of butterfly and bee species utilizing the pollinator gardens in 2021 and 2022. There are plans to add other pollinator plants to increase pollinator diversity in the future.
