About the Program
DTE Energy manages several WHC-Certified habitats across Michigan, including a 300-square-foot pollinator garden at the Newport Service Center. The garden was planted in 2016 and hosts exclusively native plants including columbine, mountain mint, purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan and prairie dropseed. The team originally created the gardens to replace non-native turf grass, in line with a larger corporate objective to benefit pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Practices and Impacts
  • The site follows the Michigan Pollinator Initiatives "Protection Plan" for pollinators, which includes eliminating or limiting pesticide use.
  • The team also manages the area in ways that decrease mowing activities to reduce CO2 and minimize stormwater runoff.
