About the Program
The Boone Pollinator program is operated by Bayer in Boone, Iowa. Boone is situated in the Des Moines township, and the program site is close to the Dickcissel recreation area. The site contains grasslands and a large pond. As part of the Boone Pollinator program, 4.5 acres of the grassland have been developed as pollinator habitat through seeding and subsequent management, such as mowing and controlled burns. The pollinator habitat is particularly targeted toward supporting monarch butterflies.

Practices and Impacts
  • The monarch project involves 4.5 acres of grassland planted with a seed mix containing beneficial species such as milkweed. The aim of the project is to provide a suitable habitat for visiting monarch butterflies, including host and nectar plants and basking areas. Annual monitoring by team members has observed large counts of over 100 monarch butterflies in the late summer months, prior to their migration. The project aligns with a state-wide initiative to increase the amount of monarch habitat available locally.
