About the Program

Exelon Corporations' Wentworth Prairie consists of five acres of grassland habitat in the Calumet Region of Illinois actively managed to preserve wildlife communities. The program is a part of the ComEd Prairie Program that manages 30+ grassland habitats for wildlife in Illinois. The site continues to focus on partnership and communication with adjacent conservation organizations — such as the Forest Preserves of Cook County (FPCC) and The Friends of the Forest Preserves (FOTFP) — to enhance, protect and strengthen the local green corridor that connects wildlife habitat and nature preserves in the Calumet Region.

Practices and Impacts
  • ComEd partners with local experts and contractors to conduct annual monitoring using survey techniques and annual environmental assessments.
  • Additionally, the property manages the habitat and targets invasive species by using chemical treatment, mowing and prescribed burning while planting >50% natives species in the grassland. The Native Floristic Quality Index (FQI) increased from 22.4 to 40 from 2015 to 2022, indicating positive habitat management.
