About the Program
The TLS Portland program is operated by Toyota Motors North America in Portland, Oregon. The site is located by the Willamette River, a major tributary of the Columbia River. On a stretch of bioswale — which totals around 1.3 acres of grassland, shrubs and trees running adjacent to the river — the team has placed a nesting platform designed to be utilized by osprey. Ospreys are an apex predator in aquatic wood webs and are known to have been impacted due to loss of suitable natural nesting habitat.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team placed a purpose-built osprey platform with perch, suitable for supporting a large osprey nest, in the bioswale area next to the river.
  • The platform provides an ideal spot for ospreys to nest as surrounding trees in the area are still too immature.
  • Monthly monitoring of the platform is carried out by the team from a distance, in order to minimize disturbance.
