About the Program
Located in the heart of Indiana, the DePuy Synthes program, overseen by Johnson & Johnson, epitomizes a commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement. Situated in Warsaw, this initiative encompasses four impactful projects that seamlessly weave conservation practices into the corporate landscape, making significant contributions to Indiana's rich biodiversity. In the vibrant landscape of Indiana, the DePuy Synthes program not only champions environmental stewardship but also fosters a culture of sustainability within the community. Through bird habitat creation, pollinator support, biodiversity awareness initiatives and invasive species management, the program showcases the synergy between corporate excellence and ecological responsibility, leaving an enduring mark on both the local ecosystem and community well-being.

Practices and Impacts:

  • The bluebird project focuses on cavity-nesting songbirds, including the eastern bluebird, tree swallow and house wren. The team installed seven nest boxes in 2022 and witnessed the first season's activity, with increased nesting observed in 2023 due to earlier nest box placement.
  • The site includes two bee boxes, two butterfly boxes and a dedicated pollinator garden that provide crucial support for pollinator species, including the monarch butterfly, bumblebee and carpenter bee.
  • The team created a self-guided biodiversity interpretive trail system, highlighting vital features of habitat and species' projects. In addition, interpretive signs were installed to showcase bluebird and wood duck habitats, native forest habitats, invasive species management and a monarch butterfly pollinator garden.
  • The addition of a meandering sidewalk in 2023 through the picnic area enhances accessibility, and an all-employee event in May 2023 promoted the walking trail and raised awareness about sustainable initiatives.
  • To manage invasive species on-site, the team developed a unified plan targeting common landscaping plants and forested undergrowth species, including wintercreeper, Chinese silver grass, barberry, autumn olive, amur honeysuckle, Morrow's honeysuckle, common buckthorn, multiflora rose and dame's rocket. This work represents a dedicated commitment to invasive species management, aiming to restore and preserve native plant diversity.
