CCC Pollinator Garden

About the Program
Commercial Contracting Corporation is a general contractor located in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The company began a 400-square-foot pollinator garden located in front of the office building in September 2021. The project's goals are to provide pollinator habitat using native Michigan plant species and to increase employee awareness and education. Nine employees volunteered to share responsibilities of the new garden including planning, monitoring and maintenance, which has been a fun and inspiring team-building activity that is also beneficial for the environment.

Practices and Impacts

• The garden replaced an area of non-native Kentucky Blue Grass turf grass.
• Eleven flower and grass species were planted initially. The following year, dead plants were replaced and seven additional species were planted.
• Regular maintenance is conducted including mulching, weeding, watering and replacing dead plants. Pesticides are not used.
• An automatic sprinkler system is used to conserve water.
• The project team monitors the garden noting plant species, health and presence of any pollinators.
• Employees have learned about the native plants and invasive species.
