About the Program
Summit Materials is a leading vertically integrated materials-based company that supplies aggregates, cement, ready-mix concrete and asphalt. Conservation objectives of the 54-acre wetland are to maintain adequate, measurable hydrologic conditions within both the eastern and northern wetlands during their fall and spring critical growing seasons so that native plants and animal species are supported regardless of nearby mining and pit dewatering.

Practices and Impacts
  • Early surveys of wetland animal species sought to identify the presence of aquatic wetlands species, particularly three species of concern — the spotted turtle, the Carolina gopher frog and the eastern tiger salamander — so as to avoid harming the species and to notify agencies of the presence of such species for additional protection.
  • Actions include pumping pit water to each wetland to allow for infiltration into the wetlands as a means of supplementing existing groundwater levels (as needed).
