About the Program
Baltimore Gas and Electric has utilized a GEB (greening existing buildings) strategy to create a green (vegetated) roof on its headquarters building in Baltimore, Maryland. The roof was installed to provide habitat primarily for avian and pollinator species, reduce energy costs, filter stormwater and promote human productivity through the creation of a green space in an otherwise urban setting.

Practices and Impacts
  • Both native trees (river birch) and a variety of pollinator friendly plants were established to support birds, pollinators and other related wildlife.
  • Over two thousand square feet of sedum mats made of low-growing succulents were installed to provide typical green roof benefits.
  • The roof also included 3,262 square feet of native herbaceous plants intended to provide pollinator habitat in addition to typical green roof benefits.
