About the Program
CEMEX looks for ways to engage employees in events that increase their knowledge and appreciation for the value of biodiversity. The education project relates to the Landscaped Monarch School habitat. The learning opportunity began in December 2023, and learners are engaged in this project once per year. The conservation education objective is for learners to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for native landscaping and native trees in Texas and learn tree planting.

Practices and Impacts
  • A formal, written pre-quiz was given to all participants prior to the event, which assessed the learners' existing knowledge of the trees species being planted, proper procedures for planting a tree, native landscaping and their likeliness to utilize native landscaping at home. The pre-quiz was sent out to participants several days before the event and responses were collected using Microsoft Forms.
  • After the event a formal, written post-quiz was given to participants to assess the change in their knowledge and behaviors acquired through the event. The questions on the post-quiz featured all the same questions from the pre-quiz so that the changes in responses could easily be tracked and evaluated.
  • The average score increased from 5.7 out of 10 on the pre-quiz to 7.3 out of 10 on the post-quiz. Correct answers to the quiz were not revealed until after the post quiz, ensuring an accurate measurement of existing and acquired learner knowledge and change in behaviors.
  • Overall, the event fulfilled the objectives of increasing learner knowledge of native Texas trees, their ecological value, and the proper procedures for planting a tree.
  • Nineteen respondents rated the logistics of the event as 4.89 out of 5. All of the comments were positive, and everyone seemed to enjoy the event.
