About the Program
Abbot’s Abbot Park Headquarters is located approximately 40 miles northwest of Chicago, in Green Oaks Illinois. The grassland project on site is bordered by roads and is situated just west of Lake Michigan. The team actively monitors and manages the grassland to enhance and maintain native habitat for the eastern bluebird and other wildlife.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team manages two grassland areas, totaling 28 acres, for invasive species including teasel, thistle, and common burdock. Management was conducted using selective herbicide treatment, cutting and removing seed heads, and mowing. A controlled burn was conducted on both grassland sites in 2020.
  • Volunteers planted hundreds of pollinator friendly native plant species, including milkweed, in 2019 to provide host plants and nectar plants for pollinators.
  • The team partners with ecological professionals to collect monitoring data on plant species, identifying 50 plant species within the grasslands.
  • 25 bluebird nest boxes are monitored throughout the breeding season to collect information on wildlife use within the grasslands.
