About the Program
Vulcan Materials Company's Dale Quarry is located just south of Richmond, Virginia. The site consists of 20 acres which contain woodland, grasslands and a pond. The team, which includes a wildlife leader, enhances growth of native milkweed to benefit native pollinators, birds, and insects. Native cavity-nesting songbirds are supported by 20 nest boxes, which are regularly maintained and monitored. They also work to control invasive plants, such as kudzu.

Practices and Impacts
- The team conducts a weekly walk-through of grassland to monitor milkweed growth and wildlife. Grassland edges are mowed twice per year to prevent spread of kudzu, and milkweed seed pods are collected annually.
- Twenty suitable nesting boxes boxes are now in place at the site. The team performs monthly bird nest monitoring, increased to bi-weekly during breeding season. Nests and eggs have been observed in recent years.
