Chaffee Wildlife Preserve
About the Program
Waste Management has overseen the nearly 500-acre Chaffee Wildlife Preserve in Erie County, New York since 1998. The team maintains wildlife corridors through the preservation of mature forests, wetlands and open fields in the Wildlife Preserve as well as in the active landfill. Waste Management's creation of a buffer zone between the active landfill and the nature preserve allows for the enhancement of keystone resources. A series of storm water retention ponds have been created in the landfill and are monitoring on a strict schedule. The team also encourages biodiversity through activities such as bird boxes, brush piles, mowing schedules and trail maintenance.
Practices and Impacts
- The team conducts quarterly hikes in partnership with the Earth Spirit Educational Services staff and documents wildlife seen in the area. Data has shown an increase in biodiversity identified, in particular, the number of bald eagle sightings.
