About the Program
Waste Management's Turnkey Recycling and Environmental Enterprise site in New Hampshire hosts a diversity of native habitats, including 163 acres of managed forests, 70 acres of grasslands, and 153 acres of important riparian habitat along the Isinglass and Cocheco River. In addition to efforts to enhance and protect these habitats and the native wildlife and vegetation within them, the site's team leads several educational efforts to engage the public in conserving local habitats.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team offers regular tours and other events for the public and local students, including opportunities to learn about stream systems and wildlife through trout stocking and the importance of pollinators through honeybee hives on site. These efforts reach about 700 people a year.
  • The Turnkey site is also home to the Gonic Trails, and trail system and accompanying educational materials that are managed by the Waste Management team. Signage and a trail map allow visitors to learn about local habitats and efforts to protect them, all while enjoying the habitats in-person through the hiking trail. It is estimated that the trails receive more than 7,000 visitors a year.
