About the Program
Skyline Landfill is operated by WM about 15 miles southeast of Dallas, Texas. The site is bordered by Tenmile Creek on the north and Interstate 45 on the east. The team has maintained a 12-acre mitigation wetland on-site since 1992. Projects on-site also include a half-acre of pollinator landscaping and an outdoor learning center. The team performs strip mowing on a semi-annual basis and installed duck boxes and bird houses around the lake area to provide nesting habitat for wildlife. Collectively, these projects were created to enhance wildlife habitat on-site and provide educational opportunities for the community.

Practices and Impacts

  • The team created a 1.5-acre Outdoor Learning Center to engage youth in environmental education on-site. Tour groups visit the landfill to learn about wildlife habitat, while also learning about the renewable energy facility that collects landfill gas produced from decomposition to produce electricity.
  • The team has partnered with community groups, including Indian Trail Master Naturalists, Boy Scout Troop 206 and local consultants, to achieve planting and monitoring activities.
