About the Program
Summit Materials' Cox Station Quarry is located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. They specialize in manufacturing crushed granite through either drilling or blasting. The produced aggregate is then used in a variety of products including concrete and the bases for turf fields. Located along the Fraser River, the quarry is also surrounded by mountainous terrain to the east and Vancouver city to the west. Because of this, a wide variety of wildlife frequent the site. The team's overarching conservation objectives include supporting the natural plants and animals that share their facility space.

Practices and Impacts
  • In 2104, the team installed three nesting poles on their site to serve as alternative nesting options for osprey. Two platforms are used each year, with team members observing young in late July/early August. By late August/early September, fledglings are fully independent and leave the nest. The third platform, while never hosting a nesting pair, has made a great location from which to rest and hunt in the nearby pond and rivers.
  • Each year, approximately 200 children from neighboring middle schools visit Cox Station Quarry. Partnering with Minerals Ed, students learn not only about geology and local minerals, but also about the surrounding habitat and the team's osprey project.
