About the Program
The Cox Station Quarry is a granite rock quarry manufacturing crushed stone via drilling and blasting solid rock. This quarry is located in southwestern British Columbia just 18 miles northeast of Abbotsford and south of the Fraser River. This site hosts a variety of forested and riverine habitats, which makes it an excellent destination for educational tours. The three osprey nesting platforms on-site also provide nesting opportunities for the native osprey.

Practices and Impacts
  • The nesting platforms on-site are monitored weekly to determine use of these platforms by osprey. In the past two years, two out of the three platforms have been used by nesting pairs, with the third used mostly as a hunting and resting perch.
  • The mining and conservation educational tours on-site typically happen several times a year for school groups; however, with impacts from COVID, only one tour was held in 2022. This tour still proved quite successful, with 120 participants learning about mining practices and the different wildlife that use the variety of habitats surrounding the site.
