About the Program
Located 17 miles north of Fresno in Friant, California, CEMEX's Rockfield Quarry contains a 100-acre native riparian forest. The forest is located along approximately 1.5 miles of the San Joaquin River immediately adjacent to the Rockfield site and around ponds created as a result of gravel mining. The objectives of the project are to provide additional nesting habitat to create greater opportunities for successful breeding of cavity-nesting songbirds .

Practices and Impacts
- In March 2017, CEMEX voluntarily installed 10 nest boxes for cavity-nesting songbirds at the Rockfield facility around approximately 100 acres of native riparian forest next to the San Joaquin River. Native plant species in the forest include valley oak and Western sycamore.
- In February 2018, an additional 10 nest boxes for cavity-nesting songbirds were installed.
- The native forest habitat where the boxes are located provide food due to the abundance of seed, nectar, insects and plant material. The nest boxes provide safe nesting sites for the successful propagation of young to help maintain and increase the targeted native species.
- In 2023, there were successful nests in 18 of 20 songbird boxes, with a successful fledgling of 129 tree swallows.
