About the Program
Bacardi-Martini USA is renewing a pollinator education project at its plant in Puerto Rico. Pollinator populations in Puerto Rico have been impacted by agricultural pesticides, lack of knowledge about the importance of the pollinators to the Island's ecosystem, and Hurricane Maria. The project raises awareness about conservation of native pollinators (butterflies, bees, bats, birds) and their importance for the production of healthy crops for food, fibers, edible oils, medicines, and other products.

Practices and Impacts
  • The company has created a pollinator garden (0.9 acres) in the visitor access area. The pollinator garden provides nectar, pollen, cover, and larval host plants they need in order to feed and reproduce. In addition, colorful flowering species will enhance the visual aesthetic of the site.
  • Employees contribute to the garden through planning, coordinating with contractors and monitoring.
  • Employees organize and conduct educational presentations about pollinators at community events, schools and for visitors to the site.
  • An annual event was conducted within the local community to raise awareness in people of all ages about the importance of pollinators.¬†Approximately 100 employees and over 200,000 visitors have been reached through the program.
