About the Program
Occidental Petroleum Corporation (Oxy) operates Plainesville Works northeast of Cleveland, Ohio, between the Grand River and the southern shore of Lake Erie. Oxy manage 17 acres of grasslands and approximately two acres of pollinator habitat. The location serves as a 1,000-plus-acre stopover site for migratory birds and monarchs, supporting the team’s dual objectives of fostering habitat for migratory birds and providing forage for pollinators.

Practices and Impacts
- In 2020, 23 bluebird houses were added to the site, and in 2021, a kestrel nest box/perch was constructed.
- The project team implemented an invasive species project in late 2022 to remove tree of heaven from the forested area. Early treatments seem to be working. This project is also intended to help reduce the potential for the spotted lanternfly, since they primarily feed on tree of heaven.
