About the Program
The project site is located in Bogotá, Distrito Capital, the capital city of Colombia, and it is administered by CEMEX Colombia. The site was formerly used for mining, but the team is rehabilitating the land and restoring the ecosystem. It is located by the Tunjuelo River, and it is part of the greater Bogotá savanna ecosystem. In order to support the restoration project, the CEMEX team has planted native trees to reforest areas and has installed structures to encourage greater avian diversity.

Practices and Impacts
  • Atracción de Avifauna began in 2016 in a 32-acre forest restoration area.
  • Monitoring is conducted in a variety of land cover types including the reforested areas, grasslands and the main water body (river).
  • Plant species are selected with seeds and fruit appealing to the native avifauna. Nesting opportunities are augmented by structures. The habitat conditions are also suitable to attract reptiles.
  • A consultant conducted annual monitoring (excluding 2020 due to COVID restrictions). Results show increased numbers of species as well as species new to the area. Evidence of reproduction was observed in the most recent monitoring.
  • The species observed serve various ecological functions including pollinators, seed spreaders, predators and insectivores.
  • A total record of 265 individuals distributed in 9 orders, 16 families, 21 genera and 21 species were observed.
