Ann Arbor Pollinator Project
About the Program
Tetra Tech's Ann Arbor site is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan approximately 40 miles to the west of Detroit. The project site is on a large business park with a central pond. The project consists of two raised beds totaling 100 sq ft, in which native plants, selected for their value to pollinator species, are maintained by the project team. The project aims to support and enhance pollinator populations in the area whilst providing an attractive showcase for native plants and pollinators to staff, visitors and neighboring businesses.
Practices and Impacts
- In 2018 the team built 100 square foot garden beds planted with native, pollinator plants to attract larger numbers and more diverse pollinator insects. The garden provides nectar supplies, shelter, and water for pollinators, as well as a breeding location for monarch butterflies. The garden also replaces common grasses, helps with drainage, reduces the need for pesticides and provides beauty.
- The team monitors the gardens weekly from Spring to first frost. Data collection includes identifying and counting pollinators and noting any plants that need attention.
- The team maintains the garden through periodic removal of weedy species, watering, and splitting of overgrown plants to allow enough room for growth.
